THOSE LAZY, HAZY DAYS OF FOODBORNE ILLNESS

June 12th, 2008 · No Comments · Food Borne Illness, Food Safety, Trends, USDA

The FSIS, Food Safety and Inspection Service, a branch of the USDA, explains why there are more cases of foodborne illnesses in the summer.

Naturally, bacteria like the summer weather — hot and humid. They multiply faster in hotter temperatures, especially when the humidity is high, too.

But the human factor causes most illnesses. Summertime activities such as picnics, camping, grilling, and even eating out on the patio increase the chances of foodborne illnesses, primarily because people aren’t as careful about washing their hands, cooking to the proper temperatures, or preparing raw foods on separate surfaces.
