CHINA’S FOOD-SAFETY CHIEF RESIGNS IN WAKE OF POISONED MILK SCANDAL

September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments · Food Borne Illness, Food Safety

After a cancer-causing agent, melamine, was found in no less than 22 different Chinese companies’ milk products, the head of the country’s food-safety agency has resigned.

So far, 53,000 children infants have been sickened by the tainted formula.

All Chinese milk-product exports have been banned throughout Asia, including instant-coffe mix to milk-based candy.

In order to boost profits, some milk suppliers water down their milk, then add melamine which appears to increase its protein content. This is the same chemical that poisoned American pet food last year.
