Scientists in Britain have discovered how listeria infects babies in the womb, which could lead to a preventive medicine, they believe.
Though listeria affects most adults with just mild flu-like symptoms, it can be fatal for the unborn child.

Salmonella poisoning has affected at least 144 people in Western Europe. Though most of the cases are in Britain and Ireland, health officials believe that the salmonella that has sickened two people each in France, Finland and Sweden is from the same source, believed to be a processing facility in Ireland.
