CHICKENS THAT LOOK PRE-COOKED RESPONSIBLE FOR SALMONELLA POISONINGS

In the wake of at least 32 salmonella poisonings in 12 states, the USDA issued a warning to consumers to fully cook chicken dishes and carefully follow the instructions on the packages.
Though the chicken is raw in certain “Chicken Cordon Bleu” and “Chicken Kiev” packages, it appears to be cooked because of breading or pre-browning.  [...]

USDA TO PUBLISH LIST OF STORES WITH RECALLED PRODUCTS

Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer today announced that beginning next month, the USDA will begin listing retail stores with meat and poultry products involved in Class I recalls - those of the most serious concern to public health.

BAD BEEF

JSM Meat Holdings, out of Chicago, is voluntarily recalling an unspecified amount of beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli.
The beef was distributed for further processing to companies in eleven states. The FSIS discovered the contamination. No illnesses have been reported as yet.

MORE STRINGENT BEEF LABELING TO BE CONSIDERED

USDA’S FSIS NOW SPELLS OOEET

The USDA announced it has created a new office specifically to educate small meat processors in complying with food-safety regulations. Richard Raymond, the head of the Food Safety and Inspection Service said that the new office was created with existing USDA funds and employees.

Chicken from Canada that may be contaminated with listeria
A Canadian company, Inovata Foods, is recalling several thousand pounds of frozen chicken entrees distributed to several places in the United States. According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the chickens may be contaminated with listeria.
